Company under scrutiny on suspicion of large-scale money laundering
In this case, a company owner was suspected of large-scale money laundering, forgery, and more. The investigation services were alerted and a criminal investigation followed, including an information request to FIU-the Netherlands.

With an information request, investigative services can inquire whether any unusual transactions relevant to the investigation, are listed in our database. If we have relevant reports, we thoroughly analyse whether the unusual transactions are indeed suspicious and forward them to the investigation services. In the present case, we indeed found several suspicious transactions.
Various reports
Among other things, the owner was suspected of laundering criminal money, falsifying invoices for services not rendered and paying employees under the table. She was also suspected of drug offences and subversive crime, involving various government agencies. Our analyst explains: “I came across various reports of unusual transactions connected to the company owner. They were filed by a bank and an accountancy firm who had reviewed their customer relationship and transactions after the company received extensive negative media coverage.”
Larger network
Our analyst investigated the reports. “The unusual transactions led to several individuals, similar companies and companies in other sectors. These companies invoiced for services that we suspect have never been carried out. The accountant’s transactions were a good addition to the reported bank transactions. Gradually, the contours of an extensive network became visible.”
Importance of reports at a later stage
After the request, reports connected to the case kept pouring in, our analyst describes. “These reports provided more and more details about the network of the entrepreneur. Even though the investigation was already at a fairly advanced stage, these reports provided crucial information for the criminal case and for the possible confiscation of criminally obtained assets. The latter is an important aspect of financial investigations.”
This example showcases once again how important it is to report unusual transactions, even in the later stages of a criminal investigation. The analyst concludes: “In this instance, the reports revealed a large network, which appears to have undermined the very fabric of society.’
Ultimately, several files containing various transactions were declared suspicious.
