Only if you are fortunate enough to enjoy a large inheritance can you afford to live the high life without some kind of income. Yet FIU-the Netherlands regularly comes across large transactions by people who are not among these happy few.
As in the case of one particular resident of The Hague: he had no property, and there was no sign of an income of any kind. In short, the man seemed to be living on air. And this air appeared to be highly lucrative, as he paid in cash for a second-hand BMW costing €18,500, made a number of money transfers, and was stopped on the way to his country of origin with another €11,500 in cash in his inside pocket. All in all sufficient reason for FIU-the Netherlands to declare the transactions suspicious and to hand the case over to the Fiscal Intelligence and Investigation Service (FIOD).
