FIU-Netherlands signed up to the Statement of Principles

Today, FIU-Netherlands signed up to the Statement of Principles for a multilateral approach to combating illegal trade in wild animals.

Illegal trade in wild animals is a billion-dollar business that causes serious harm to society and nature. Criminals use complex international structures to transport animal products and conceal cash flows. By providing insight into financial flows and cooperating across borders, we can tackle these networks.

As Hennie Verbeek-Kuster, head of FIU-Netherlands, puts it: “The illegal trade in wild animals may seem like a niche problem, but in reality it is a major driver of money laundering and other forms of organized crime. By working together and sharing financial intelligence internationally, we can truly disrupt these criminal structures.”

With this commitment, we at FIU-Netherlands are making an active contribution to a safer and more sustainable world. Together, we are exposing and undermining the financial foundations of organized crime.
